Case study · automation for a college planner
College profile reports that build themselves
A college planner needs a clear profile of each college a family is considering. I built a system that collects the figures and produces the finished PDF report, and a second tool for revising essays with AI help.
The job
One college profile holds hundreds of data points: admissions rates, test scores, costs, financial aid, who attends. Before, each one was copied and pasted into the profile by hand, for every college. A wrong figure in a report is worse than a missing one.
The result
The system now collects the figures and builds the profile, in far less time than doing it by hand.
What I built
- Collection. The system gathers each college's admissions statistics, SAT and ACT score ranges, grade point averages and class rank.
- Costs and aid. Cost of attendance in state and out of state, tuition and fees, room and board, books, and merit-based and need-based aid.
- The report. The figures are laid out as a formatted PDF profile, ready to give to a client. One command produces it.
- Getting the data right. Most of the work was correctness: fixing wrong demographic figures, wrong addresses and out-of-date years before they reached a report.
The essay revision tool
A web app where a person revises an essay with AI help. It has a full user interface, so someone who does not write code can work in it directly.
Why this matters for your business
Many offices build the same report again and again from figures that live somewhere else. If yours does, the collecting and the layout can be automated, and the checking is where a person's time should go.
